Annual Open Day 2023

On December 2nd 2023 the History of Deganwy Group held their annual Open Day in Peniel Chapel.

Members and passers-by were able to view an array of display boards with detailed information about the 1944 Avro Anson crash near Marl Woods, the anniversary of which was shortly to be commemorated (see https://www.deganwyhistory.co.uk/research_articles/avro-anson-mk-1-n5130/ and  https://www.deganwyhistory.co.uk/avro-anson-service-of-commemoration/).

Many items from the Group’s archive were available to view, including maps, images and books.

There was also a display of photos from Conwy Archive Service, and copies of documents shedding light on the history of schools in Deganwy, from the initial founding of the first school in Llanrhos to the current Ysgol Deganwy. These included a list of signatories to a letter objecting to various proposed sites for the new school, and several people were able to spot their house name on the list.

The event was visited by Mayor of Conwy, Cllr Evie Roberts, and by our local MP, Robin Millar, who both took time to talk to those present and showed an interest in the Group’s activities.

A slideshow ran throughout the day showing scenes from the area in the past, and people were able to view these whilst enjoying the fantastic home-baked cakes provided, once again, by Angela Smith, to whom we are extremely grateful. Many people struck lucky on the tombola, and members were able to renew their subscriptions and collect their membership cards on the day.
