Nadolig 2018

Taflen Newyddion 27

Croeso cynnes i chi i Daflen Newyddion Nadolig 2018. Rydym yn edrych ymlaen yn fawr iawn at flwyddyn lwyddiannus arall yn hanes y Grŵp, sef y flwyddyn lle byddem yn dathlu ein degfed pen-blwydd.

Wrth edrych yn ôl ar 2018 cawn ein hatgoffa am nifer o ddigwyddiadau pleserus dros ben ag unwaith eto am y sgyrsiau ardderchog a gawsom ar amrywiaeth o bynciau.

Yn gyntaf daeth Morgan Burgess atom i sôn am arhosiad y Normaniaid yng Nghymru ac yn Chwefror cawsom ein noson anffurfiol ‘Pigion Hanes’ gyda chyflwyniadau gan Adrian am gasglwyr Perlysiau Deganwy, Elan yn son am hanes y diwydiannwr enwog Zac Brierley ac yna Vicky yn rhoi hanes Pit Ceiliogod Conwy.

Brierley Garage

Ym mis Mawrth cawsom hanes y Ffrynt Gartref yn y Rhyfel Byd 1af. Addas iawn o gofio canmlwyddiant y Rhyfel Mawr. Daeth Terry James atom yn Ebrill i son am y Llengoedd Rhufeinig yn yr ardal ac ym Mai Chris Jones oedd y gŵr gwadd yn sôn am Reilffordd Ffestiniog a’i effaith ar Ddiwydiant Llechi’r Ardal.

Terence James

Daeth tymor yr hydref gyda Meurig Jones yn rhoi hanes Portmeirion a’i Chymeriadau i ni ac yna daeth Avril Robarts atom i ddatgelu rhai o gyfrinachau’r Treialon Dewiniaeth yng Ngogledd Cymru.

Cawsom deithiau allan hefyd, yn cynnwys taith gerdded tywys o gwmpas y Pentref ac yna ymweliad ag Oriel Môn yn Llangefni. Daeth nifer o bobl atom at ein stondin ar Ddiwrnod y Prom – diwrnod llwyddiannus iawn. Yn ddiweddarach yn y flwyddyn fe ymwelwyd â Gorsaf Bad Achub Llandudno yng Nhgraig y Don.

Eleni aethom ar wibdaith dros y ffin i Ironbridge. Diwrnod dymunol iawn, a chinio blasus ym Mwyty Brookhouse Mill ger Dinbych ar y ffordd adref.

Museum of the Gorge

Judith Phillips, gohebydd gyda’r Daily Post oedd ein siaradwraig gwadd yn ein cinio blynyddol ym Mwyty Paysanne yn Nhachwedd.

Yn Nhachwedd hefyd cynhaliwyd ein Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol. Dyna pryd cyhoeddodd Elan Rivers ag Adrian Hughes eu dymuniad i adael y Pwyllgor am gyfnod oherwydd galwadau eraill. Does dim digon o eiriau i egluro cyfraniad aruthrol y ddau ohonynt i’r Grŵp Hanes dros y blynyddoedd. Rydym yn ddiolchgar iawn iddynt am eu gwaith i’r Grwp ac yn wir gobeithio byddant yn ail ymuno a’r Pwyllgor eto yn y dyfodol agos.

Daeth y flwyddyn i ben gyda’n Diwrnod Agored blynyddol unwaith eto dan oruchwyliaeth fedrus Adrian. Testun yr arddangosfa eleni yw

i) Lluniau o hen Ddeganwy – tros 150 o luniau digidol a hen gardiau post o archif y Grŵp.

ii) Pobl enwog o Ddeganwy –

Peter Jones – Joci o Dywyn;

Harold Lowe–5ed Swyddog ar y Titanic;

iii) Hanesion rhai a gladdwyd ym Mynwent Llanrhos yn cynnwys y tirfeddiannwr y Fonesig Augusta Mostyn a’i hail fab, Henry; penseiri – George Felton a G A Humphries; Major Septimus Tonge a Gunner Daniel Evans – a laddwyd yn y Rhyfel Mawr a William Miller a Patrick Murphy – a laddwyd mewn damwain difrifol yn Neganwy ym 1901.

iv) Pabo Hall a’r Carcharorion Rhyfel o’r Almaen a’r Eidal. Mae’r arddangosfa yn adrodd hanesion eu bywydau tra yn yr ardal a hefyd atgofion pobl leol oedd yn eu hadnabod.

Hefyd roedd casgliad o lyfrau, delweddau, mapiau a dogfennau eraill ar y byrddau i’r aelodau ‘ar ymwelwyr eu mwynhau.

Rydym yn ddiolchgar iawn i Kevin a’i dîm am barhau gyda’r gwaith o gynnal a chadw Ffynnon Santes Fair yn Llanrhos – safle rydym yn awyddus i gadw mewn cyflwr taclus.

Mae gennym raglen amrywiol a llawn a ddiddorol ar eich cyfer unwaith eto yn 2019. Os hoffech gael mwy o fanylion, cewch gopi o’r rhaglen gan aelodau’r Pwyllgor. Gobeithio bydd y rhaglen yn eich denu i ymuno a’r Grŵp a’i weithgareddau. Mae’r Tîm sy’n gyfrifol am baratoi’r Rhaglen eisoes wedi dechrau ar y gwaith ar gyfer 2020. Os oes gennych unrhyw syniadau am siaradwyr yr hoffech i ni wahodd i’n cyfarfodydd, byddem yn falch i glywed gennych.

Rydym wedi cynhyrchu cylchgrawn arbennig, (Cymraeg a Saesneg) eleni i son am rai, yn unig, o’r pethau mae’r Grŵp Hanes wedi cyflawni ers ei sefydlu yn 2009. Mae copïau ar gael am £2.50.

BARGEN! Ar hyn o bryd mae llyfr Betty Mills ‘Flowers on a Path’ ar werth am bris gostyngedig o £3.50 am un copi, £4 am 2 copi neu £5 am 3 copi hyd at ddiwedd mis Ionawr yn unig, felly manteisiwch ar y fargen yma, anrheg wych i’ch cyfeillion a’ch teulu. Bydd yr holl incwm yn mynd i goffrau’r Grŵp Hanes.

Wrth derfynu, anfonwn ein dymuniadau gorau atoch am Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda.

Christmas 2018

Newsletter 27

A warm welcome to you to the 2018 Christmas Newsletter. We are looking forward very much to another successful year in the Group’s history which will see us celebrating our tenth anniversary.

Looking back over 2018, we are reminded of a number of pleasant activities and once again a series of excellent presentations on a variety of subjects.

Firstly Morgan Burgess came to tell us about the Norman occupation of North Wales, followed in February by our informal evening ‘Snippets of History’. This year Adrian spoke about the Deganwy Herb Collectors, Elan gave us an insight into the noted industrialist Zac Brierley and Vicky ended the evening with her presentation about the Conwy Cock Pit.

In March we heard about the Home Front in the 1st World War. Very appropriate bearing in mind the centenary of the Great War. Terry James came to us in April to tell us about the Roman Legions in the area and in May, Chris Jones gave us an illustrated talk about the Ffestiniog Railway and its effect on the Slate Industry in the area.

Chris Jones

The autumn term started with a vivid portrait of Portmeirion, its history and Personalities by Meurig Jones followed by Avril Robarts revealing some of the secrets of the Witchcraft Trials of North Wales.

We had outdoor trips as well, including a guided walking tour of the Village and then a visit to Oriel Môn in Llangefni. We attracted a number of visitors to our stall on Prom Day – a very successful day. Later in the year we visited the Llandudno Life Boat Station at Craig y Don.

This year’s Field Trip took us over the border to Ironbridge. Another pleasant day out with a very tasty meal at Brookhouse Mill Restaurant near Denbigh on the way home.

Ironbridge

Judith Phillips, a columnist with the Daily Post was the guest speaker at our annual lunch at Paysanne Restaurant in November.

We also held our AGM in November. This is when Elan Rivers and Adrian Hughes announced their wish to stand down from the Committee for a time due to other commitments. There are not enough words to tell of the enormous contribution made by both of them to the Group over the years. We are very grateful to them for their work with the Group and we hope that it will not be too long before they feel they are able to re-join the Committee.

The year ended with our annual Open Day once more under the able supervision of Adrian. This year’s theme was

i) Deganwy in old pictures – Over 150 digitised images and old postcards from the Group’s archive.

ii) Deganwy Personalities –

Peter Jones – Tywyn jockey;

Harold Lowe – 5th Officer on the Titanic;

Jack Howarth – Actor

iii) Dead Interesting – Stories of some of the men and women buried at Llanrhos cemetery including landowners – Lady Augusta Mostyn and her second son, Henry; architects – George Felton and G A Humphries; Major Septimus Tonge and Gunner Daniel Evans – victims of the First World War and William Miller and Patrick Murphy – victims of a terrible accident at Deganwy in 1901.

iv) Pabo Hall and the German and Italian Prisoners of War. The exhibition tells of their lives while in the area and also the memories of local people who knew them.

A selection of books, images, maps and other documents were on display on the central table for members and visitors to enjoy.

Kevin and his band of workers have continued with the work of maintaining St Mary’s Well at Llanrhos – a site we are anxious to keep in a tidy condition.

We have an interesting and full and varied programme for you in 2019. If you want more details, a copy of the programme can be obtained from members of the Committee. We hope that the programme will entice you to join the Group and take part in its activities The Team responsible for preparing the Programme has already started on their work for 2020. If you have any suggestions for guest speakers we could invite to our meetings, we’d be glad to hear from you.

We have produced a special journal this year (Welsh and English), that covers some only, of the Group’s activities since it was founded in 2009. Copies of the journal are available for £2.50.

BARGAIN! We have a special offer at the moment with Betty Mills’ book ‘Flowers on a Path’, on sale from now until the end of January only, at a reduced price of £3.50 for one copy, 2 copies for £4 or 3 copies for £5 so take advantage of this bargain, an ideal gift for your friends and family. All proceeds from the sale of the book goes to the History Group funds

In conclusion, we extend to you our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
