Croeso cynnes i Daflen Newyddion Hydref y Grŵp Hanes a gobeithio y cewch rywbeth ynddo a fydd o ddiddordeb i chi.
Yn dilyn y dechrau llwyddiannus a gawsom i’r flwyddyn, cynhaliwyd nifer o ddigwyddiadau a chyfarfodydd arbennig o ddiddorol. Diolch i’r tîm sy’n paratoi’r rhaglenni ar ein cyfer sef Elan Rivers, John Davies a Lucinda Smith. Mae’r gallu ganddynt i ddewis sgyrsiau a denu siaradwyr sy’n plesio gymaint o’n haelodau. Mae’n anodd credu bod gennym dros 70 o aelodau yng Ngrŵp Hanes y Pentref ar hyn o bryd.
Yn Ebrill daeth Dr Mark Baker, sydd erbyn hyn yn Gynghorydd ar y Cyngor Sir, atom i roi’r hanes am Gastell Gwrych ger Abergele ac am y gwaith mae ef ac Ymddiriedolwyr Cadwraeth Castell Gwrych yn gwneud i adfer y Castell a’r tiroedd. Yna, ar noson braf ym mis Mai, aeth tua 50 o’n haelodau a nifer o ymwelwyr yn ymuno a ni, i weld y Castell ac i gael mwy o hanes gan Mark am yr adeilad a’r gerddi. Roedd pawb ohonom wrth ein bodd o weld Ystafell Ysgrifennu’r Fonesig Dundonald yn y ‘Gardener’s Tower’ wedi cael ei adfer yn llwyr. Roedd yn braf cael y danteithion ar ddiwedd yr ymweliad – diolch Mark.

Ym Mehefin aeth nifer fawr o’n haelodau allan unwaith eto am daith gerdded. Y tro hwn, o gwmpas ardal Bodafon yn Llandudno dan arweiniad Elan. Cyfarfu’r Grŵp ar Lôn Ffynnon Sadwrn, ac er sŵn y traffig, y gwynt a’r gwylanod, ni chafodd Elan unrhyw drafferth i drosglwyddo ei neges oherwydd roedd yn defnyddio megaffon newydd y Grŵp am y tro cyntaf. Dangoswyd nifer o fannau diddorol, yn cynnwys Ffynnon Sadwrn ei hun. Unwaith eto cawsom ein trin i ddanteithion ar ddiwedd y daith yn Fferm Bodafon.
Ar noson braf arall yng Ngorffennaf cafwyd taith cerdded arall – y tro hwn yng Nghonwy. Ymunodd 45 o aelodau ar y daith i gael ein tywys o amgylch y dref gan Dennis Roberts, yr hanesydd lleol, i glywed am hanes y dref tuag at ddiwedd adeg y Rhyfel Cartref Seisnig. Cyfeiriodd yn arbennig at hanes John Williams a aned ym mhlasty Parlwr Mawr ar Stryd y Capel ym 1582 ac a benodwyd yn ddiweddarach i fod yn Achesgob Caer Efrog. Cyfeiriodd hefyd at y cyffro a fu rhwng John Williams a Syr John Owen o Glenennau wrth i’r ddau ohonynt geisio cymryd rheolaeth o’r castell a’r dref.
Yn ogystal â’r teithiau a’r sgyrsiau difyr hyn, mae Kevin a’i griw wedi bod wrthi eto yn parhau gyda’r gwaith o dacluso Ffynnon Mair yn Llanrhos ac i osod planhigion a hau hadau sy’n addas i’r safle. Fel y gwyddoch, fe ddadorchuddiwyd plac ar y safle llynedd gan Faer Conwy, ond erbyn hyn, trwy garedigrwydd Gwynt y Môr a’r grant a dderbyniwyd ganddynt, fe osodwyd ffens a giât i wneud y safle yn fwy diogel. Ewch draw i’w weld – ni chewch eich siomi.
Rydym yn edrych ymlaen yn eiddgar iawn at y sgyrsiau a drefnwyd ar ein cyfer am weddill y flwyddyn fel a ganlyn:

Hydref 19 – Cyffordd Llandudno yn y 1950’au – David Williams.
Tachwedd 4 – Cinio Blynyddol y Grŵp ym Mwyty Paysanne, Deganwy – Y Gŵr Gwadd – Mr David Rogers-Jones yr Ocsiwnïar.
Tachwedd 16 – Y Cyfarfod Blynyddol, i’w ddilyn gyda Hanes Plant Colledig Llewelyn ein Llyw Olaf – Mrs Heulwen Bott
Rhagfyr 2 – Y Diwrnod Agored Blynyddol. Byddem yn dra diolchgar am eich cymorth unwaith eto gydag eitemau i’r arddangosfa a hefyd eich cymorth i fwydo’r ymwelwyr a gwobrau i’r raffl. Rydych wedi bod yn garedig iawn yn y gorffennol ac fe hoffem ddiolch i chi am hyn.
Gobeithio bod y fwydlen uchod yn ddigon blasus i’ch denu i barhau i gefnogi’r Grŵp a’i weithgareddau. Dowch a’ch ffrindiau.

Newsletter No. 24
A very warm welcome to the History Group’s Autumn Newsletter from which you will find, hopefully something that will be of interest.
Following on from our successful start to the year, a number of activities and meetings have occurred which have been particularly interesting. Thanks to the History Group’s Programme Team, Elan Rivers, John Davies and Lucinda Smith who have arranged talks and speakers that appear to please so many of our members. It’s hard to believe that there are now over 70 members in the Village History Group.
In April, Dr Mark Baker, who has now been elevated to County Councillor, came to give us a talk about Gwrych Castle near Abergele and about the work the Gwrych Castle Conservation Trustees are undertaking to restore the Castle and grounds. Then on a warm evening in May, nearly 50 members and friends visited the Castle in order that Mark could give us more information about the building and gardens. We were all thrilled to see the work that had been done to Lady Dundonald’s Writing Room in the Gardener’s Tower. We enjoyed the refreshments provided for us at the end of the visit – thank you Mark.

In June, several of our members were out again on an evening walk. This time the guided walk was led by Elan, in the Bodafon area of Llandudno. The Group met at Ffynnon Sadwrn Lane, and despite the noise from the traffic, the wind and the seagulls, Elan had no problem in delivering her message as she was using the Group’s new megaphone for the first time. We were shown a number of interesting sites including Ffynnon Sadwrn Well itself. Once again, we were treated to refreshments at Bodafon Farm at the end of the walk.
Guide – Dennis Roberts
On another pleasant evening in July, we had yet another evening walk – this time in Conwy. There were 45 members in the Group led by local historian Dennis Roberts who took us on a guided tour of the town to hear of its role towards the end of the English Civil War. He referred in particular to the story of John Williams who was born in Parlwr Mawr in Chapel Street in 1582 and was subsequently appointed Archbishop of York. He referred also to the animosity that existed between John Williams and Sir John Owen of Clenennau, both of whom sought to gain control of the Castle and the town.
In addition to these interesting visits and talks, Kevin and his team have continued with the work of keeping St Mary’s Well in a tidy condition and by planting and seeding the site with species suitable for the site. As you know, the plaque on the site was unveiled last year by the Mayor of Conwy, but by now, with the grant so generously given to the Group by Gwynt y Mor, a new fence and gate have been erected to make the site more secure . It is well worth a visit – you will not be disappointed.
We are looking forward enthusiastically for the talks which have been arranged for us for the rest of the year as follows:

October 19 – Llandudno Junction in the 1950’s – David Williams
November 4 – History Group Annual Lunch at Paysanne Restaurant, Deganwy – Guest Speaker – Mr David Rogers-Jones the Auctioneer
November 16 – The Annual Meeting followed by the Story of the Lost Children of Llewelyn ap Gruffydd – Mrs Heulwen Bott
December 2 – Annual Open Day. We would be very grateful once more for your help with items for the exhibition and also with feeding the visitors to the Exhibition and with raffle prizes. You have been very generous in the past and we are very grateful to you all for your support.
