Nadolig 2017

Taflen Newyddion Rhif 25

Croeso cynnes i chi i Daflen Newyddion cyntaf y Grŵp yn 2018. Gobeithio eich bod i gyd yn barod am y Nadolig.

Rydym yn edrych ymlaen yn arw at flwyddyn lwyddiannus arall yn hanes y Grŵp.

Wrth edrych yn ôl ar dymor yr hydref llynedd rhaid tynnu sylw unwaith eto at y sgyrsiau ardderchog a gawsom.

Yn gyntaf daeth James Berry atom i sôn am hanes a thraddodiadau Dyffryn Conwy a sut y bu i ddiwydiannau’r fro datblygu dros y canrifoedd. Roedd hanes y diwydiant adeiladu cychod yn hynod o ddiddorol.

Yn ail, daeth David Williams atom i son am ei brofiadau o fyw yn nhref rheilffordd Cyffordd Llandudno yn y 1950au. Cafodd y gynulleidfa llawer o hwyl yn son am bobl roeddynt yn adnabod o’r lluniau a ddangoswyd.

Ein trydydd siaradwr gwadd oedd Mrs Heulwen Bott. Mae Heulwen yn aelod o’r Grŵp Hanes a chawsom darlith ganddi dan yr enw pryfoclyd ‘Y Plant a Gollwyd’. Hanes oedd hwn am ddiwedd llinell Tywysogion Cymru o ganlyniad i’r hyn a ddigwyddodd i Gwenllïan, merch Llywelyn ein Llyw Olaf a’i chefndryd – y Plant a Gollwyd.

Rydym mor ffodus ein bod yn gallu denu pobl mor wybodus atom i siarad am destunau mor ddiddorol a chyffrous.

Cynhaliwyd ein cinio blynyddol ym Mwyty Paysanne yn y pentref ym mis Tachwedd. Ein gŵr gwadd oedd yr Ocsiwnïar David Rogers Jones a chawsom hynod o ddiddorol a difyrrus ganddo.

Gwyn Hughes

Yn Nhachwedd hefyd, cynhaliwyd ein Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol. Dyna pan cyhoeddodd Gwyn Hughes a John Davies nas oeddynt am ailsefyll i fod ar y Pwyllgor. Fel y gwyddoch, mae’r ddau wedi gwneud gwaith aruthrol ar ran y Grŵp dros y blynyddoedd ac maent wedi bod yn frwdfrydig iawn ynglŷn ag amcanion y Grŵp. Rydym yn ddiolchgar iawn i’r ddau ohonynt am eu cyfraniadau Er hynny, rydym yn falch iawn o gael croesawu Trefor Price i’r Pwyllgor ac mi fydd yn cymryd lle Gwyn fel Gwe Feistr y Grŵp.

Daeth tymor yr hydref i ben gyda’n Diwrnod Agored blynyddol. Fe drefnwyd hwn gan Adrian Hughes ac rydym mor ddiolchgar iddo am yr holl waith paratoi trylwyr a wnaed i greu arddangosfa mor broffesiynol a ddenodd gymaint o edmygedd gan bawb a ddaeth draw ar y diwrnod.

Christmas 2017

Newsletter 25

A warm welcome to you to the Group’s first Newsletter of 2018. We hope you are all ready for Christmas.

We are eagerly looking forward to another successful year in the Group’s history.

Looking back at last year’s autumn season, mention should be made once again about the excellent speakers we have had.

Firstly James Berry came to talk to us about the history and traditions of Conwy Valley and about how the industries in the area developed over the centuries. The story of the boat building industry was particularly interesting.

Secondly David Williams gave us a fascinating pictuire of life in the railway town of Llandudno Junction in the 1950’s. The audience enjoyed looking at the old photographs and recognising people from the pictures shown.

Heulwen Bott

Heulwen Bott

Our third guest speaker was Mrs Heulwen Bott who is a member of the History Group. Her talk had the provocative title of ‘The Lost Children’. This was the story of the demise of the hereditary line of the Princes of Gwynedd as a result of the fate which befell Gwenllian, the daughter of Llywelyn, the Last Prince of Wales, and her cousins – the Lost Children.

We are so lucky to be able to attract speakers who are so knowledgeable to talk about such interesting topics.

We held our Annual lunch in November, at the Paysanne Restaurant in the village. Our guest speaker was the Auctioneer, David Rogers Jones, who gave an interesting and entertaining talk.

John Davies

John Davies

We also held our AGM in November. This is when Gwyn Hughes and John Davies announced their decision not to seek re-election to the Committee. As you know, both have worked tirelessly for the Group over the years and have always been enthusiastic in their support for the Group’s aims. We are extremely grateful to both of them for their contributions. In spite of this we are glad to welcome Trefor Price on to the Committee where he will take over Gwyn’s role as the Group’s Webmaster.

Our autumn season ended with our annual Open Day. This was arranged by Adrian Hughes and we are so grateful to him for all his work in preparing such a professional exhibition that attracted so much admiration from those who visited us on the day. The theme of the Exhibition was to do with various aspects of life in the village – Deganwy Youth; Deganwy Personalities; Deganwy and the 1st World War; Deganwy through the Seasons. If you missed the opportunity to view this excellent Exhibition, it can be seen again at the National Assembly Building, Llandudno Junction from 22nd January until 2nd February 2018.

St Mary's Well - May 2017

Kevin and his band of workers have continued with the work of maintaining St Mary’s Well at Llanrhos. Through the generosity of the Gwynt y Môr, Community Fund, a new fence has been erected around the site. It is well worth visiting this tranquil spot. We are most anxious to keep the site in a tidy condition, so if you would like to be part of Kevin’s team, we’d be very glad to hear from you.

We have an interesting and full and varied programme for you in 2018 and the Team responsible for preparing the Programme has already started on their work for 2019

If you have any suggestions for guest speakers we could invite to our meetings, we’d be glad to hear from you.

At our first meeting on 18 January, Ms Morgan Burgess will give a presentation about the Normans in North Wales.

The guest speakers for the remainder of the spring term will be as follows:

February 15 – ‘Snippets of History’ where individual members of the Group give a short talk on historic matters that are of particular interest to them as follows:

Deganwy Herb Collectors – Adrian Hughes; Zac Brierley Story – Elan Rivers; Conwy Cockpit – Vicky Macdonald

March 15 – The Home Front in World War 1 – Jane Kenney

April 19 – In the footsteps of the Roman Legions – Terry James

May 17 – Influence of the Ffestiniog Railway on the Local Slate Industry – Chris Jones

We hope that the above menu is tasty enough to entice you to join the Group and its activities.

BARGAIN! We have a special offer at the moment with Betty Mills’ book ‘Flowers on a Path’, on sale from now until the end of January only, at a reduced price of £2.50 for one copy or 3 copies for £5 so take advantage of this bargain, an ideal gift for your friends and family. Income from the sale of the book goes to the History Group funds

In conclusion, we extend to you our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
