On Thursday 20th February the Deganwy History Group were treated to a Snippets evening. As is custom for the Snippets evening, three speakers gave talks on topics they have researched or have direct links with.
Our first talk was “my Birthday” by the local journalist Judith Phillips. Judith gave us a very interesting account of how her mother gave birth to a baby daughter under what was then a very serious and life threatening conditions. It was probably only because Judith’s father knew there was some American doctors located nearby in Llandudno who could possible help with the delivery that both mother and child were saved. The doctors were Americans who were stationed in Llandudno in 1944. Thankfully, one of the doctors volunteered to return with Judith’s father to the maternity home and successfully perform the procedure. Judith went on to become one of North Wales leading journalists working for the North Wales Weekly News and the Daily Post.
Our 2nd talk was by Stephen Lockwood who told us about Conwy born Rosa Mabel Lee who was undoubtedly a beacon for women working in science. Please click on this link for the full account.
Rosa Mabel Lee, a trailblazer for women in science
The 3rd and final talk of the evening was by our Chairman Kevin Slattery who has maintained a record of photos taken at St Mary’s Well. This well was re-discovered and restored in the early 1990s by Ken Davies and is now regularly maintained by several volunteers from the history group.
Kevin showed several photos of how the well changes through a typical year (2024) with the surrounding plants, trees and other biodiversity. With the help of some of the audience most of the plants were identified in the photos. So the well is continuing to support life in a variety of ways and long may it continue to do so.
