Aeth peth amser heibio ers i ni gynnal y gwasanaeth coffa i’r 5 gwr o’r awyrlu a laddwyd pan ddaeth yr awyren yr oeddynt yn hedfan ynddi i lawr yng Nghae Erw ger Fferm Marl yn Chwefror 1944, ond mi fyddai’n dda cofnodi unwaith eto’r gwaith ymchwil a wnaed gan Gwyn Hughes i’r trychineb. Felly, fe welwch lun o’r plac a gyflwynwyd i Gwyn i ddangos gwerthfawrogiad y Grŵp iddo am ei waith.

Hefyd fe welwch gerdd a ysgrifennwyd gan y Parchedig Peter Walker i gofio am y digwyddiad. Ef hefyd cynhaliodd y Gwasanaeth Coffa yn Chwefror.

(In memoriam: the 5 crew of Avro Anson N5130 – 15th February 1944)
in the long years of play & growing
& picking mushrooms in Marl Woods
history passed us by
just the khaki shadow of my father
as he spent his leave in beer & baby-making
the sharp taste of salt licked from my fingers
as the vinegar soaks the Daily Post
& Monty’s victory at el Alamein
the crumps & flashes to the north
over Birkenhead & Liverpool
like fireworks as far away as Mars
& then
as we skipped away from school
on a cold February afternoon
a loud curse of metal
like a cow in Emyr’s slaughterhouse
& a mad rush of birds in panic
clouding the sun with our childhood fears & prayers & silence
only the red fruit
hanging from the bony branches
& the smell of burning pine
that even now fills me with little sparks of tears
five souls floated down like sycamore seeds
to land where poppies grow
& children ask to find the stories behind
the names
& learn that sometimes
freedom knocks at the door of our hearts
with a heavy, heavy hand

Ym mis Mehefin aeth parti ohonom dan arweiniad Fiona Richards, ein Dirprwy Gadeirydd, am daith gerdded o gwmpas Llandudno i ganfod y Cerrig Ffin rhwng hen blwyf Llandudno ag Eglwys Rhos. Noson braf iawn a braf hefyd oedd cael torri syched ar ddiwedd y daith.
Yng Ngorffennaf, dan arweiniad Jane Kennney o Ymddiriedolaeth Archeolegol Gwynedd cawsom daith gerdded min nos i Gastell Deganwy. Roedd hwn yn ddilyniant i’r cyflwyniad cawsom gan Jane llynedd pan roddodd sawl esboniad diddorol am y dulliau adeiladu a ddefnyddiwyd ar y safle. Cawsom wybodaeth gryno hefyd am hen Fwrdeistref Deganwy a fu’n bodoli cyn Bwrdeistref Conwy.
Awaiting the Start
Ym mis Mai aeth 50 ohonom am wibdaith i Langollen. Roedd hyn yn cynnwys taith ar y trên stem o Langollen i Garrog ac yn ôl. Ar ôl cael tamaid i fwyta yn Llangollen, aethom yn ein blaenau i Froncysylllte i fynd ar gwch ar y gamlas a dros Pontcysyllte yn ôl i Langollen. Cyn cyrraedd y gwesty ar Fwlch yr Oernant am bryd o fwyd, ymwelwyd ag Abaty Glyn y Groes.
Mae gennym gyfres lawn o ddigwyddiadau ar gyfer tymor yr hydref yn cynnwys ein Cinio Blynyddol ar 26ain Hydref pan ddisgwyliwn yr Athro Robin Grove White fel ein gŵr gwadd.
Ym mis Medi rydym yn disgwyl Brian Bertola i ddod atom i roi sgwrs am y digwyddiadau yng ngwersyll Cinmel ar ddiwedd y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf ac yn Hydref bydd Graham Roberts yn rhoi disgrifiad o sut oedd pethau ym Mae Colwyn ar adeg yr Ail Ryfel Byd. Yn
Nhachwedd, yn dilyn ein Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol, bydd unigolion o’r Grŵp Hanes yn dod at ei gilydd i roi i ni ychydig o hanes Canoloesol Deganwy. Swnio’n ddiddorol iawn.
Byddwn yn cynnal ein Diwrnod Agored Blynyddol yn Rhagfyr fel arfer ac rydym yn gwahodd pob aelod i ddod ag unrhyw hanesion yr hoffent rannu gyda ni am hanes y pentref. Rydym hefyd unwaith eto yn gofyn am gymorth gan yr aelodau ar y diwrnod i ddarparu te/coffi i’r ymwelwyr.
Rydym yn anfon ein dymuniadau gorau i’r holl aelodau unwaith eto ac yn edrych ymlaen am dymor hapus a gweithgar.

It is some time since we held the memorial service to the 5 airmen who died when their aeroplane came down in Cae Erw near Marl Farm in February 1944:

It would be good however, to record once again the research work done by Gwyn Hughes into the tragedy. Here is a picture of the plaque presented to Gwyn to mark the Group’s gratitude to him for his work.
Also shown is the poem written by Reverend Peter Walker to commemorate the event. The Reverend Walker also officiated at the Memorial Service in February.

In May we had a very interesting talk by Bill Chapman entitled ‘The Romance of Place Names’.
In June, Fiona Richards, our Deputy Chairman, led us on an intriguing walk around Llandudno to view the Boundary Stones between the old parish of Llandudno and Eglwys Rhos. It was a delightful evening and we all appreciated the opportunity to quench our thirst afterwards
In July, Jane Kenney of the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust led an evening walk to Castell Deganwy. This was a follow up of the talk given to us bv Jane in 2013 when she propounded some very interesting theories about the construction methods used on the castle site. We also had some very concise information about the ancient Borough of Deganwy which existed before the Borough of Conwy
In May, 50 of us went on a Field Trip to Llangollen. This included a return steam train journey from Llangollen to Carrog. After having a bite to eat in Llangollen, we set off once more to Froncysyllte where we boarded a canal barge and made our way back to Llangollen by crossing the World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Before arriving at the hotel on the Horseshoe Pass for our evening meal, we visited Valle Crucis Abbey.
We have a full series of events for the autumn which will include our Annual Lunch on 26th October when our guest speaker will be Professor Robin Grove White.
In September we are expecting Brian Bertola to give us a talk about the Kinmel Camp riots at the end of the 1st World War and in October Graham Roberts will give us an insight into how things were in Colwyn Bay during the 2nd World War. In November, following our AGM, individual members of the Group will come together to give us a bit of history about Deganwy in the Middle Ages. This sounds as though it will be an interesting evening.
Our Annual Open Day will be held as usual in December and we would invite all members to bring with them any story they would like to share with us about the history of the village. Once again we would ask for help from the members on the day with the preparation of tea/coffee.
We send our best wishes to all our members and we are once again looking forward to a happy and successful season.
