Trip to Llangollen

The beautiful Vale of Llangollen was the destination for a coach trip, superbly organised by History Group Secretary Ifor Williams, which offered something for everyone.   

a bright Spring day almost four dozen history group members and friends were taken over the mountains to Llangollen where they enjoyed the delights of a seven mile steam train journey to Carrog and back again on the old GWR privately restored railway.

After a short time in the town for lunch or sightseeing, the coach took everyone to Froncysyllte to embark on a chartered canal boat across the world famous 127 foot high aqueduct built in 1805 by the great engineer Thomas Telford.  There was an excellent commentary by the boatman throughout the relaxing two hour trip back to base, and many of the group took a Welsh Afternoon Cream Tea at their table.

The coach then took the party the short distance to the best preserved monastery in North Wales – Valle Crucis Abbey – founded in AD 1200.  Although, as expected, entrance to the abbey and its grounds had just closed for the day, one of the History Group’s committee members, Elan Rivers, briefly explained the features and historical importance of the building.

The day rounded off with an excellent evening meal efficiently served by the staff of the Britannia Inn at the foot of the Horseshoe Pass.  

Although it had been a rather long day, with the coach getting back to Deganwy shortly after nine o’clock,  there was no doubt that everyone appreciated the way it had been gone smoothly to plan.  Vicky Macdonald expressed thanks to Ifor, and to the skilful driver, for making the whole trip so enjoyable.
